Horticulturist From Tennessee Aquarium Designs Natural "Islands Of Colorful Forest" For Greenfields

Landscaping Greenfields
Landscaping Greenfields
and Lake George

We have been consulting with Charlene Nash, who works as the horticulturist for the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, for several months regarding our landscaping plans for Greenfields. Charlene's expertise and philosophy of keeping things natural, colorful, and low maintenance are greatly appreciated. Her first project is the park area on Lake George. We want a variety of plants and trees that will be colorful during each season, attract butterflies and birds, plus provide food and shelter. To accomplish this goal, there will be several "islands of forest" consisting of native and newly planted trees, shrubs, flowers, and other perenials. Charlene has designed these "mini-forests" with complex detail and a variety of plants.

Upper Story: Existing hardwood trees (predominantly oak). Add sourwood, wild cherry, hackberry, tupelo, mulberry, persimmon, hickory Middle Story Trees: (also provide food, bloom, fall color, etc.) dogwood, serviceberry, hawthorn, buckeye, lindera Lower Middle Story: Large schrubs, beauty berry, hollies, sumac, clethra, chokecherry, viburnums, blueberry

Under Story: shade tolerant perennials, geranium, partridgeberry Sunny Edges:asters, lazy susans, coneflowers, milkweed, coreopsis, violets, woodpoppy, blueeyed grass, fleabane, daisies Aquatic Plants: (around the edges of Lake George) A variety of irises, water plantain, cardinal flower, pickeral weed, lizard tail, duck potato, arum, hibiscus, rice Aquatic Trees: Cypress (plus numerous other species of plants)

My goal is to make many beautiful and natural, low maintenance, perpetual gardens throughout Greenfields.
